JOB SUMMARY
Supervise the laboratory department, establish policies, standardized procedures, and objectives to provide services, evaluate and maintain quality, coordinate with other departments to provide high-level services to patients. Instruct and supervise laboratory staff and students.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Direct the Quality Assessment program and use it to supervise and monitor all aspects of laboratory operations.
- Distribute tasks to staff to ensure compliance with the Quality Assurance (QA) program and all established standards.
- Enforce established laboratory standards and ensure all laboratory phases are always prepared for inspections.
- Keep all required licenses, permits, and certifications up to date. Coordinate with the Laboratory Administrator (or their administrative assistant) to ensure timely renewals, visible placement, and proper archiving.
- Review laboratory manuals at least once a year to ensure they are up to date. In collaboration with Medical Technologists, ensure that the methodology of each test aligns with the inserts and that copies are included in each manual. Any changes should be incorporated into the manual in coordination with the director and technical supervisor, who must sign off on them. Prepare an annual review program for these manuals.
- Enforce established standards by sending memos, holding documented meetings, giving educational talks, and using other mechanisms to achieve objectives. In coordination with the director, technical supervisor, and administration, administer competency evaluations for staff under supervision. Prepare a program to ensure staff evaluations are conducted according to established standards.
- Report any situation that may affect compliance with standards and patient care to the relevant authorities.
- Supervise staff to ensure the laboratory remains orderly and all areas are always organized, including bench work, phlebotomy area, reception, office, and storage.
- Maintain complete and up-to-date personnel files for laboratory staff, including health certificates, duties, evaluations, and other documents.
- Ensure reception staff attend to patients with care and excellence.
- Oversee that samples are collected, prepared, preserved, stored, and transported according to the patient test handling manual and specific laboratory instructions.
- Ensure test results conducted in the laboratory are available for patient delivery within the specified time and according to established TAT standards.
- Supervise the receipt of test results sent to reference labs. Ensure they are received within the expected time and available for patient delivery as scheduled.
- Prepare timely lists of needed reagents and materials and submit them to the Administrator for requisition. Ensure the available quantity is sufficient.
- Available to work during weekends.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technologist
EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from an accredited institution with 3 to 5 years of experience.
- Valid and current license in good standing or without restrictions.
- Member of the Puerto Rico Board of Medical Technologists Examiners.
